What Exactly is a Frogface?

The Fall of 1960 was an exciting time. Kennedy was elected President, I had my first birthday party, and right after Labor Day I entered first grade. And that was the day I became Frog Face......

It was a cool, bright day when I hopped on to an aging bus driven by Mrs. Kuenle. Our stop was pretty much the last one before school, so every one saw the last 4 or 5 of us get on. Which was not an advantage for a kid recovering from a horrible cold.

Because the moment I spoke, a skinny, dull eyed 4th grader asked me what was wrong with my voice. Not being aware of the trap that lie ahead I replied the only way I knew how.

"Why I have a frog in my throat", Which of course was what Mom & Dad had jokingly called the scratchiness in my voice..

And so it was that for the next 4 or 5 years I became "Frog Face". It was a source of anger, pain, and many a fight on the playground. This was not helped a cruel, uncaring Father who heaped his own  vitriolic and hateful upon Mom and I every single day. Unfortunately to most of the world Dad was "a good man". Our secret dysfunctional family life remained closed till Dad died in 1999.

Sticks and stones may not be able to break your back. Continued verbal abuse, no matter the source can and usually does break your spirit and can lead to a sense of worthlessness and insecurity.

Today it is all a faded memory, albeit one that serves to remind me of the thin skinned brat from Xenia, Ohio who was once known as "Froggy" at St. Brigid Elementary School. And yet some remnants of the verbal abuse continue to reverberate in my head.

You can help prevent hazing, harassment and school violence. Speak out to someone. Do not hold it in, for that only invites the abuse to worsen. Call Childeren's Service, tell a teacher. If an adult experiencing this treatment, seek the help of Mental Health professional, and get out before it escalates to violence.

Other Sites of Ours

Other sites, such as the tribute to the WWII 96th Infantry Division, which saw action on Leyte (The Philippine Islands) and Okinawa. My Father was a member of the 96th from the time it was re-organized in late 1942 until May 1945 when he was left behind enemy lines, subsequently found, and sent back to the USA to recover from what was then termed "shell shock", which we know today as Post Traumatic Shock Disorder.
